Romney Withholds Comment on Killings
Romney, who has spent a considerable amount of money in the state, has struggled to convince voters of his conservatism, thanks to several recent conversions he's undergone. Many social conservatives just don't trust Romney, and it's clear that Romney is not a Southerner. "He comes across as being over-coached, over-focus grouped in his language," said GOP consultant Chip Felkel. According to Woodard, there's another reason Romney hasn't connected: "Fred Thompson says 'y'all,' and Mitt Romney doesn't."

MUST READ:
Fred Thompson is clearly in over his head! In both his fumbling pre-candidacy period and his hesitant, attenuated post-announcement campaign, he’s given the clear impression that that he is ill-informed, inarticulate, badly briefed and downright lazy.
Thompson is counting on his conservative positions on social issues and the wunder-dust generated by his “Law & Order” stardom to propel him into the lead in the presidential race. But, as Harriet Miers’s failed candidacy for the Supreme Court suggests, one does not just need to be conservative to prevail. It takes a little talent, too. Thompson seems to lack the interest, energy, will, ability and stamina to compete at this level.

There's a danger with Huckabee: he's very independent, and while he would certainly consult Dobson and would acknowledge Dobson's role in the evangelical firmament, Huckabee does not help defining what it means to be an evangelical. Bishops receive no salary or financial reward of any kind. Neither are they isolated members of the clergy. There is no special clerical order within the Church for them to belong to. Romney's senior advisers met recently in Boston to present him with a blueprint for the next four months centered on what some call a kindling strategy — the belief that early victories in places like Iowa, Michigan and New Hampshire will make him impossible to stop by Feb. 5, when a crush of other states vote at once

PolitiFact took issue with Mitt Romney for saying, in a comment about President Clinton, that "our spending on national defense dropped from over 6% of GDP to 3.8% today." He took the 6% figure from the Reagan years, more than six years before Mr. Clinton took office. Romney spokesman Kevin Madden says it was a deliberate choice to "clarify just how dramatic the cuts were." He says his candidate's claims were "accurate and supported by the facts."
