26% - Romney Jumps Into The Lead In South Carolina, Thompson Loses Ground

Jonathan Torgovnik | Newsweek
Mitt Romney submitted to what he jokingly called "35 minutes of torture." In a wide-ranging talk with NEWSWEEK's Jonathan Darman and Lisa Miller, Romney touched on his family, his religion, his management style—and, excerpted here, Iraq and the distinction he draws between his own leadership style and that of the current president
NEWSWEEK's HIT on MITT: Mitt's Mission, Voters can't connect with a candidate they feel they don't know. Mitt Romney has to decide how much he wants to share.
Who is Mitt Romney: the early state GOP frontrunner is the Newsweek cover boy. The article is not flattering
The reporter assumes that Romney has a problem. If reporters weren't so arrogant, they might realize that they are the ones having problems. They are the ones that should be embarrassed for asking him questions that no other candidate has to answer. They should be the ones that realize that Romney's specific religious beliefs have little to do with what kind of president he will be.
They don't need to explain their conclusion, this is journalism! I want some data. Journalist just make crud up. Like saying that Romney has downplayed his family. What other candidate has spoken more about their family?
The identity of his biggest multimillion-dollar donor, and how Romney could blow away his GOP competitors on campaign spending.
Putting his money where his mouth is...Campaign Expects Former Gov. To Contribute $15 Million Of His Own Money
"He can quite literally write a $20 million, $30 million, $40 million check on New Year's Day, and no one will know," says a strategist for another Republican candidate. "All the campaigns are preparing for that. Everybody knows it will happen, we just don't know when or how big it will be."
Romney are expected to have raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $10 million for the quarter but how much of his own fortune will Romney kick in this quarter?
Aides to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney let slip that they expect he will have finished September having raised more than $40 million overall.
Romney’s campaign advisors are fond of reminding us, we do not have a national primary and the success of each candidate depends on how well he does -- and more importantly, how well he manages expectations -- in the series of primaries and caucuses that will determine the eventual nominee
Clinton, Romney strategists face off on ads
Twenty-four percent of likely Republican caucus-goers supported Romney.
"Not one [Democratic] candidate was uncomfortable with young children learning about same-sex marriage in the second grade," said Romney, who has vocalized his opposition to same-sex “marriage.” "This is a subject that should be left to parents, not public school teachers
Josh Romney said he and others are working hard to educate Wyoming residents about Mitt Romney's campaign
Republicans say they receive the most calls from Mitt Romney's campaign. Some are taped messages, others are from supporters. "He's the most active on phone calls — by far," says Mike Miltner, who owns an insurance agency.
Colorado: Mitt Romney was the least recognized name, with 67 percent
Lauren Daigle, the college coordinator for Mitt Romney's campaign, urged pro-life voters to support the former Massachusetts governor, whom she said is the strongest candidate on the issue and also is the candidate best poised to the lead the country.

Looking Presidential
After surveying the entire field of Presidential candidates, I made the decision several months ago to give my tentative support to the campaign of Fred Thompson. I believed Thompson to be the most electable candidate whose views aligned most closely with my own.
Now I'm not so certain. His views of the federal marriage amendment, the Schiavo case, and his general position on federalism are troubling. For me, conservatism trumps federalism, while the position Thompson endorses seem to reverse that order.
Evangelicals turn on Thompson
"Underwhelming," is how Bill Ballenger, editor of the influential "Inside Michigan Politics" newsletter characterized Thompson's address.
Businessman Tom England of Gladstone, Michigan, who had described himself as "leaning to Fred" at the dinner the evening before, told me after Thompson's remarks: "I'm a fan of Fred's. But he needs to give me more. He was too laid back, he didn't address a lot of issues. And I'm a country boy myself but Fred needs to get off my grand-daddy's porch."
The mediocre reviews came after a day in which Thompson had what a BBC Radio correspondent described to me as "the biggest scrum of all."
Clearly, Fred Thompson drew the biggest buildup of any of the '08 contenders arriving at the Grand Hotel--and clearly suffered the biggest letdown after his remarks.
Fred, Lies, and Audiotape
Thompson's folksy candor, which his advisers had thought would be a priceless asset to his late-breaking presidential campaign, instead has sometimes produced a comedy of errors that has forced his long-suffering aides to patiently amplify and correct his vague pronouncements

"If true, this is an ominous sign for Romney, whose strategy is contingent on building momentum by winning the early states. ... these numbers cut into one of the central arguments made by Romney supporters all year--that although he has lower name recognition than his chief rivals, the more people get to know him, the more the like him. These results would suggest just the opposite."
